Making your own Yogurt is easy and satisfying since you get to choose all the ingredients. I like my yogurt plain made with whole milk. No sugar or additives provide me with a luscious creamy texture that I can use in a variety of recipes from sweet to savory. Give it a try, since all you need is a starter and some glas jars with lids.
(makes 4 quarts, which will keep for at least a month in the fridge)
1 gallon of whole milk
1 cup yogurt starter (you can use a small cup of plain yogurt or a cup from your previous batch or as pictured here with yogurt starter powder.)
1. Boil your preferred glas jars with a screw on lid for ten minutes in hot water to sterilize.
2. Heat one gallon of milk in a large pot to 185-190 degrees Farenheit(90-90 Celsius) no need for a thermometer just watch till the milk starts to boil, than let it cool down to 120 degrees fahrenheit(50-55 degrees celsius) by making a fingertest, it needs to be nice and warm to the touch. Make sure the liquid is not too hot, that would destroy the existing culture that we will add during the next step.
3. Stir one cup of yogurt starter into the cooled milk, using a whisk. Stir well to ensure that the starter is thoroughly incorporated into the milk.
4. Pour the milk into jars and put the lids on. Place them in a warm place like your dehydrator or oven with just your oven light on and leave for 5 hours or over night, than place in the fridge or enjoy right away ❤
